RACE COURSE “STREIF” DOWNHILL

The start of the ”Streif” race course is at 1,665 m altitude, characterized by extremely difficult and steep terrain right from the starting gate with the first sections called Startschuss and Mausefalle (mousetrap).

Right from the start, racers require a great deal of courage and self-confidence to fully charge the course, launching off to jumps of 50 m to 80 m at the sharp edge into Mausefalle. The Compression following Mausefalle has proved fatal to many a favorite in his struggle to resist the tremendous forces acting on him.

The "carrousel" of the S-combination into ”Steilhang” , and, above all, the long right-hand turn at the bottom of ”Steilhang” , will largely decide on triumph or defeat. Steilhang is the next section and may be counted among the technical highlights of the World Cup circuit. Perfect edging and exact timing is the key to success here. ”Steilhang” is followed by ”Brückenschuss” and ”Gschöss” where it is important to carry maximum speed through these flats with the help of top condition and fast skis. This straight section ends in the tricky traverse down ”Alte Schneise”, where curve specialists are favored once more.

”Seidlalmsprung” (jump at Seidlalm) was introduced as an additional highlight at the 1994 Hahnenkamm Races. Shortly before total fatigue, racers are challenged by ”Streif” in a dramatic final. ”Hausbergkante” – a jump - , followed by a difficult left-hand turn over a large roll in the terrain – ”Querfahrt” (traverse) on glaring ice – jump into ”Zielschuss” and ”Zielschuss Compression” with top speeds of up to 140 km/h then down ”Rasmusleitn” , to the finish line, where hearts beat higher and winners are cheered by thousands of enthusiastic spectators.
